Shirley Murov Greengus

Shirley Murov Greengus Seligman, a lifelong resident of Shreveport, passed away on Tuesday, April 25, 2017. Born in 1926 to the late Rebecca Raddock Murov and Nathan Murov, Shirley graduated from Byrd high school and continued her education at Sophie Newcomb Memorial College with a degree in Music. Never shy about expressing her opinion, Shirley was fiercely independent and never walked away from a challenge. Her unyielding determination allowed her to take over the family business, Sun Furniture City, following the passing of her late husband, H. Leo Greengus in 1970. She thrived on working and interacting with her customers, and continued to do so until her death at age 90. She was an active member of the Shreveport Jewish community. She served as volunteer service chairman for the Counsel of Jewish Woman, and later became the first woman president of the Jewish Federation of Shreveport and its Family Services Division. Her love of Judaism flourished throughout her lifetime. At the age of 74 she became a Bat Mitzvah. Shirley had gusto for life. Her passion for music and the arts continued beyond her musical education with her support of local Theatre, Opera, and the Shreveport Symphony. She was an avid tennis player, playing almost every weekend well into her 70s. Nothing was more important to Shirley than her family and friends. She was selfless with her time and generosity. She is survived by her three children Jerry (Heidi) Greengus, Gay (Barry) Golsen and Randy (Donna) Greengus; and her eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind numerous loving relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, April 28th at B'nai Zion Congregation. Rabbi Dr. Jana De Benedetti will officiate. To honor her memory, donations may be made in lieu of flowers to B'nai Zion Congregation Shreveport at 245 Southfield Rd., Shreveport, LA 71106.
