A Memorial service honoring the life of Shirley S. Johnston, will be celebrated at The Oaks of Louisiana Chapel, 600 E. Flournoy Lucas Rd, Shreveport, LA 71115 at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 27, 2016. This will be followed by a reception for family and friends in the Community Center at The Oaks. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 1:00 p.m. Shirley was born on June 18, 1931 in Tulsa, OK to John Raymond and Reba Dalton Sykes and passed away on December 17, 2016 in Shreveport. She worked as a secretary at BAFB in Bossier City for over 30 years until she retired. Shirley loved to help and care for others. She was an avid card player and called BINGO at The Oaks for many years. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Shirley's family was the joy of her life and will miss her dearly. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, John and Reba Sykes; her husband of 55 years, Herman L. "Buddy" Johnston, Jr.; grandson, Michael Paxton Spearman; granddaughter, Leigh Michael Carey; sisters, Marilyn Wyatt, Reba Steelman, and Celia Johnston; brother, Raymond Sykes, and dear friends, Bill and Mary Rockwell, Marshall and Tootsie Swann, Pete and Adele Welch and Malvern Hamer. Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Debbie Lavergne and Pam Carey and husband, Mike; grandchildren, Jason Lavergne, Lindsey Carey, Chris Carey and wife, Beth; great-granddaughter, Emmalyn Kate Carey; sister, Marynell Windham; brothers, Frankie Sykes and wife, Joann, and Koen Sykes and wife, Laura; she is also survived by her childhood friend, Betty Hamer. Shirley was a huge supporter and volunteer of La. GUMBO, "Games Uniting Mind and Body". Memorial contributions may be made in her honor to: La. GUMBO Inc., 2840 Military Hwy., Pineville, LA 71360. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Liu, Dr. Kamm and Susan Dungan, NP for all the care they gave to Shirley while in the hospital. Our deepest gratitude goes to our dear friend that God blessed us with, Sis Theuerkauf, for all the love, care and unending support she gave to us and our mother.
