Shirley D. Philipbar

On a clear blue Friday in Shreveport, at just past ten in the morning on June 9th, 2017, Shirley Dell Philipbar neé Smith, age 81, also known as our beloved "Mammy," peacefully took her last breath on her way to eternal rest, leaving behind a host of family and loved ones who cherish her. Always smiling, with the quirkiest sense of humor, Mammy was a nurturer to all who knew her, as befitting a lifelong nurse. She sits in the second seat of 4 generations of nurses: her mother before her, her daughter following her, and her granddaughter to this day. The sweet-spirited brown haired girl with smiling eyes came into this world in 1936, by way of Miami, Florida, where she grew to be the kind soul she remained until her passing. She met and married Charles "Chuck" William Philipbar III in Denver, CO, in 1962 and made a life with him in Milwaukee, WI, where their two children were born. After a move to Kentucky, they settled in Carmel, IN, to raise their family, the place their children still consider their "growin' up" home. It was during this time that Mammy chose to put her nursing career on hold to be at home with her children. Through the years, she raised them with love, laughter, and wisdom, and through one more family move to Longview, TX, where both Chris and Bill launched successfully from the nest. Chuck passed in 1998, leaving a hole where his large personality once occupied, so Mammy moved once more, to Shreveport, with an unrelenting positive outlook to carry on with joy on her own. She never let congestive heart failure nor severe diabetes dim that joy, mothering and nurturing those around her even as she lay dying. Mammy is preceded in death by Hugo Robinette Smith (father), Grace Curry Smith (mother), and Charles William Philipbar III (Chuck, her beloved husband). She is survived by Christine Lee Philipbar (daughter) and son-in-law L. Keith Scott MD of Shreveport, LA; Charles "Bill" William Philipbar IV (son) and daughter-in-law Kirsten Philipbar of Allen, TX; granddaughter Samantha Lee McGee and husband Trey McGee of Haughton, LA; granddaughter Grace Catherine Philipbar of Allen, TX; grandson Charles "Charlie" William Philipbar V of Allen, TX; great grandson Brody Dean McGee of Haughton, LA; step-granddaughter Samantha Jo Scott of Shreveport, LA; and step-grandson Mathew Travis Scott of Shreveport, LA. A memorial service of remembrance will be led by Justin Haigler on Friday, June 23rd, 2017, at 5:30 in the evening at the Rose-Neath Funeral Home on Marshall St, just south of Downtown Shreveport. The family wishes to express their unending gratitude to The Heritage Manor Stratmore and respectfully requests, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Forensic Nurse Examiners of Louisiana, LLC at www.fnela.org or The de Paul School at depaulschool.org
