Stephen Wheeler Slaughter, age 69, of Shreveport, Louisiana, passed away Sunday, April 16, 2017, after a lengthy illness. Memorial services will be held from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall Street, Shreveport, LA. A "Celebration of Steve's Life" will be held following the memorial service. A private burial service will be at Grove Hill Memorial Park in Dallas, TX, at a date to be determined later.
He is preceded in death by his life partner of 22 years, Ed Clark, Jr., and his parents Hector Eugene, III and Julia Dorothy Slaughter.
A theatre artist and educator, Professor Slaughter graduated from Bolton High School in Alexandria, Louisiana in 1966. He earned his B.A. degree in Speech/Theatre from Louisiana Tech University and his M.A. degree in Communication/Drama from University of New Orleans. Steve retired from Bossier Parish Community College where he taught speech and theatre studies as well as founded the Cavalier Players and the performing arts degree program. During his tenure at BPCC, in addition to directing dozens of theatrical productions, Mr. Slaughter wrote and produced ten original educational children's shows for presentation at the school. These shows continue to entertain children of all ages each year at BPCC.
Over the years of his teaching at Louisiana Tech University and at BPCC, thousands of students and their parents came to know, love, and respect "Uncle Stevie" as he taught and led his students to pursue their dreams as only he could do.
His scenic design and directing talents were known throughout the community with his contributions to local Mardi Gras Balls, The Annual BPCC/Bossier City Christmas Show, the Times Drama Awards, as well as weddings, and other events.
Stephen is survived by his long-time friends and caregivers, Ray Scott Crawford and Anne Susman Kuperman; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Milton "Mickey" and Patty Slaughter of Ruston, LA and John and Sharyn Slaughter of Brentwood, TN; his sister, Cindy Slaughter Lewis and brother-in law Mike of Knoxville, TN; and a host of nieces and nephews. Also surviving Steve are the children of Ed Clark, Jr., Lisa Clark Dawson and her husband Jan of Bedford, TX and Kyle Clark and his wife Jennifer of Haslett, TX.
Steve's friends and family would like to thank all the competent and caring health care professionals that provided care for Steve at Progressive Care Center long term care facility and Willis-Knighton North MICU.
