SHREVEPORT, LA - Sylvia Schlinsky Katz, 96, of Shreveport died peacefully on August 19, 2014 at her residence. Chapel services celebrating her life will be at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 24, 2014 at B'nai Zion Congregation, 245 Southfield Rd. in Shreveport. Officiating will be Rabbi Dr. Jana De Benedetti, Rabbi Arnold Task and Rabbi Harley Karz-Wagman. Visitation will be at 11:00 a.m. until the service time at B'nai Zion Congregation. Sylvia was born July 23, 1918 to Delia and Abraham Schlinsky in Boston, Massachusetts. Following graduation from High School she finished Business College and became a Secretary. Sylvia met her true love James J. Katz while he was stationed at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts. On June 17, 1945 they married and she began her life as a resident of Shreveport. She was a dedicated Homemaker and for 18 years the Secretary of B'nai Zion Congregation. She taught Religious School for many years and was actively involved with Hadasah, B'nai Zion Temple Sisterhood and Temple Youth Advisor. Wednesday was always spent with Mahjong and her Girls. Sylvia was a devoted wife, a caring mother and adoring Grandmother. She will always be remembered for her strength and determination. She is preceded in death by her husband James J. Katz. Those left to cherish her memory are her son Stephen P. Katz, M.D. and wife Karen of Alexandria, her two grandchildren, Jeffery M. Katz of Alexandria and Laura Ann Katz of Atlanta, Georgia. The family is grateful for the kindness and compassionate care given by Mr. Jeff Crane and his staff of Shreveport and the entire staff of Emeritus of Alexandria. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of choice.
