SHREVEPORT, LA - Velma Juanita Hill, 90, of Shreveport, passed away May 3, 2016 after a brief illness. She was born April 8, 1926 in Chireno, Texas, to Velma and Jesse Hayes.
A resident of Shreveport for over 70 years she married Rudy Hill in 1946. As a young woman, she attended Draughon-Norton Business School and worked at the J.P. Beard Company, leaving that job to become a homemaker. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and taking care of her family. Later in life she became an accomplished china painter and taught classes, to many.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 54 years, J. R. "Rudy" Hill. She is survived by three children; Cookie Hill, of Shreveport; Sunny Merritt and husband, Barry, of Sierra Vista, AZ, and David Hill and wife, Cindy, of Shreveport; three grandchildren, Jennifer Hocker, of San Diego, CA, Christopher Smith, of Boulder, CO, and Derrick Hill, of Shreveport; two great-grandchildren, Jake Hocker of San Diego, CA and Charley Marie Hill, of Shreveport and numerous family and friends.
Graveside services will be held at Centuries Memorial Park Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 5, 2016 with Bro. Ted Hardan of Countryside Christian Church officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105
