Virginia "Sissie" Hanson Burge

Sissie was born on June 9, 1930 in Ida, Louisiana to Buena Gladys Martin and Jim Hanson. From an early age, she learned to love fishing and would go with her Granny, skillet in hand, ready to catch dinner for the day. She had to work in the garden and found her worms for fishing while she was there. It is well known that Sissie was a wonderful cook. She has fed several residents of Doyline at one time or another. Her love of cooking came at an early age when she helped her mother, grandmother and aunt in the kitchen. Her brothers would tease her and tell her they wouldn't go near the lake that day, because if they fell in, they would sink from the heaviness of her biscuits. This made her more determined to be a good cook, and that was a life goal she definitely achieved. You did not visit her home without eating something delicious before you left. She moved, with her family to Doyline in 1946, and attended Doyline High School her final year of school. There she met her future husband, Wilburn "Kink" Burge who was a star basketball and baseball player, who won state championships that year. They married shortly after graduating. Sissie was the mother of four beloved children, Tommy Burge of Minden, Kathy Burge Shively who resided in Minden, Barbara Burge of Minden, and Kenneth Burge of Doyline; three grandchildren, Clay Burge, Eric Burge and Barry Shively; great-grandchildren, Avery Burge, Steven Joseph Burge, Hannah Shively, and Landon Shively, and sister Ella Pearl Burt, sisters-in-law, Shirleen Hanson of Bullard, TX, Martha Gingles of Shreveport and June Parker of Duson, LA and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilburn "Kink" Burge, her daughter Kathy Burge Shively, brothers, James Hanson, Billy Noel Hanson, and Claude Gingles. Sissie enjoyed working and was employed at the Louisiana Army Ammunition Plant during the 60s and 70s, the Minden Medical Center in the 80s, and at the Hope Youth Ranch Thrift Store for many years. She also worked at the school cafeteria for a short time and was even able to get a few school recipes to add to her collection. Virginia died Saturday, November 8, 2014, at the age of 84. She was a true southern lady and had a variety of hobbies. She loved being outdoors as much as she loved being in her kitchen. She was an avid fisherman, and even after she became ill, it was not unusual to drive up and see her standing on the pier with a fishing pole in her hand. She loved to watch the birds and squirrels playing and made sure they were always well fed also. She loved to garden and had beautiful flowers surrounding her doorway and yard, and made everyone feel like family when they came to visit. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. on Monday evening, November 10, 2014 at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden and the funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at West Lake Baptist Church in Doyline with Rev.
