Walton M. Campbell

On Friday, June 18, 2021, Walton Max Campbell gently left this world to rejoice in the presence of God. He was born in El Paso, Texas on February 19, 1930, one of six sons and a daughter of Frank and Margie Campbell. At 11 years of age, his father died and due to financial hardship, his mother was forced to put her children in Buckner Orphan's Home in Dallas, Texas, where she also worked so she could be near her children. He graduated from Buckner High School then enrolled at East Texas State University. After receiving his Bachelor of Science and Master's degrees in Education, he proudly enlisted and served as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps. While continuing to serve in the 8th Marine Corps Reserve, he taught high school students and coached basketball and football at Buckner. He then moved to Denver, Colorado, to teach and coach and met Virginia Carol Moncla, also a school teacher, and they were married on June 4, 1960. After the birth of their first child, they moved to Belle Chasse, Louisiana where he continued teaching and coaching and the family was completed with five more children. In 1973, he accepted a job working in the Salaries and Administration Department as a Payroll Supervisor for McDermott International and moved the family first to Dubai, United Arab Emirates and then, in 1976, to Waterloo, Belgium as head of the Salaries and Administration, North Sea Division. They returned to Belle Chasse and the New Orleans area in 1984 and lived there until his retirement from McDermott. He and Carol retired to Marksville, where he continued his career as Office Administrator with the District Attorney's office. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 61 years, Carol Moncla Campbell; his children, Polly Ann Campbell, Amy McCrary Campbell (Al Wilson), Julie Gray Roy (A.J. Roy), Walton Max, Jr. "Jeb" (Sylvie Tran-Campbell), David Criswell Campbell and Emily Blakewood Campbell; his fourteen grandchildren, Sophie Boudreaux, Alex Boudreaux, Josh Wartelle, Jeb Wartelle, Mollie Wartelle, Grace Campbell, Madeleine Campbell, Ellen Durand, William Durand, Erik Durand, Anthony Roy, Grace Roy, Natalie Tran-Campbell and Ellie Tran-Campbell; two great-grandchildren, Eddie Wartelle and Milo Wartelle; two brothers, Paul Campbell and George Campbell and nieces, nephews and other extended family. Max will be forever known for his graciousness, kindness, generosity and faith in Christ Jesus. He embodied the Marine Corps motto "semper fidelis" as he was a steadfast friend, father, husband and servant of God. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 334 Acton Rd., Marksville, Louisiana. A church service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at Emmanuel Baptist Church Sanctuary, 430 Jackson Street, Alexandria, Louisiana with Dr. Chris Thacker officiating. In lieu of flowers, please honor Max by paying forward your blessings and love to those in need.
