Funeral services for Wilma (Joy) Hoyl Cason Young, age 95, will be held on Thursday, August 15, 2024 , at 11:00 a.m. at The Healing Place at Glad Tidings Church, with Pastor Scott Ethridge and Rev. Linnie Lindsay officiating and Rev. Matt Moreno assisting. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until service time at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Centuries Memorial Park Cemetery in Shreveport.
Joy was born April 10, 1929, in Carter, OK to Bennie Chris Hoyl and Sibyl Clara Fallis Hoyl and passed away on Friday, August 9, 2024 in Shreveport. The family moved to Clovis, NM in 1940 where she graduated from Clovis High School in 1947. Joy attended the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) and graduated with an associate's degree in 1950 .
Joy married Rev. J. M. (Mitchell) Cason of Plain Dealing, LA on August 8, 1951. Rev. Cason was the Louisiana State Youth Director. The Casons traveled the state for six years holding Sectional Youth Rallies. In 1957 the Casons came to Shreveport to pastor Glad Tidings Assembly of God where they pastored for 29 years. Rev. Cason preceded her in death on January 23, 1996.
Joy was happy to serve the church as the Pastor’s wife. She also worked as a Substitute Teacher in the Caddo School system. Joy served in the Women’s Ministry program in the local church and has served as WM Director for the Shreveport Section. She has been a member of the Glad Tidings Assembly, now known as The Healing Place at Glad Tidings, for over 65 years. She loved her church and all the members. She has gone to so many member and former member’s funerals that it has been suggested that we were professional mourners.
Joy remarried to John A. Young on Feb. 15, 1997. They were blessed with over 27 years together. A high point of many years was their annual trek around Texas to visit Joy’s extended family. The Hoyl Family Reunions were a special treat. They continued to be active at The Healing Place. John survives her. He took amazing care of her through these last years as her health declined.
Joy was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband of 44 years, Rev. J. M. Cason; her beloved son, Randy Cason; her five brothers, Ray, Basil, Leon, Denby and Bill Hoyl; her sister Helen Collins; and nephews, Leonard, Dan, Gary and Bennie Hoyl. She is survived by her husband, John Young; daughter, Rhonda (Jim) Boston; granddaughter. Brandi Cason, all of Shreveport, LA; her grandsons, Dakota (Theresa) Boston of Bossier City, LA and Colton Boston, of Shreveport, LA; nephews, Mickey (Jane) Hoyl of Morton, TX, Bobby (Darla) Hoyl of Emory, TX, Bill (Rita) Hoyl of San Antonio, TX; nieces, Linda Hoyl of Hobbs, NM, Joan Collins of Universal City, TX, Bonnie Heath and Debbie Hoyl of Cedar Park, TX. She is also survived by stepdaughter, Vicki (Bill) Sky Ellis of Haughton, LA; stepsons, Marc Steve (Pamela) Young of Atmore, AL and Robert (Joni) O’Bleness of Fort Worth, TX. Surviving step-grandchildren include Jenny (Rob) Bowes and daughter, Natalie of Bensalem, PA, Heather (Eric) Wallis and sons, Ethan and Jake of Fort Worth, TX, Kaitlin Young of Philadelphia, Courtney Orona of Justin, TX., Kimberly (Stephen) Booker and children, Bailey, Noah and Lane of Shreveport, LA and Wendy (Brad) Green and children, Megan and Dalton, of Keithville, LA.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Brookdale Assisted Living in Shreveport, where Joy and John have lived for the last 5 years, and a special thanks to LifePath Hospice for the love and care they showed to Mom over the past few weeks.
She was a wonderful Mother and Mimi! Heaven is a lot brighter with you in it, Mom! We love you and will miss you until we meet again!
Pallbearers will be Gary McAnelly, Ronnie Jordan, Jimmy Hall, Carlos Renfroe, Tony Rees and Rick Humphries. Honorary pallbearer will be Bubba Gilcrease.
