Wynton (Son) Howard Carroll, MD

SHREVEPORT, LA - Dr. Wynton Howard (Son) Carroll died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday afternoon, December 21. Following a private graveside ceremony, a celebration of his life will be held Tuesday, December 23, at 3:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall Street, with Dr. Pat Day officiating. A reception and visitation with family members will be held at Rose-Neath immediately after the 3:00 service. Dr. Carroll was born June 22, 1918, in Mansfield, LA, moved to Oil City, LA where he attended grammar school, and graduated in 1934 from Louisiana Tech High in Ruston, LA. He then attended LSU in Baton Rouge and graduated from LSU Medical School in New Orleans in 1941 at the ripe age of 21. Dr. Carroll accepted a reserve commission as Major in the Army Medical Corps and was called to active duty in WWII the same day he finished his internship at Highland Hospital in Shreveport. He served in North Africa and Italy, mostly with the 5th Army's 161st Medical Battalion. After the war, Dr. Carroll performed his first year of medical residency at New Orleans Charity Hospital as a pathology resident. He then spent two years at Shreveport Charity Hospital as a radiology resident during which time he met his bride-to-be, Jean Elder. Together, they spent his last year of residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. In July 1949, he began his radiology private practice at Schumpert Hospital with Dr. G. M. Riley. In 1952, Dr. Carroll set up the first radioactive isotope laboratory in Shreveport in the P&S Hospital after receiving his license from the Atomic Energy Commission. In 1957, he raised $50,000 to buy a cobalt unit at Schumpert Hospital and established the first radiation therapy dosimetry program in Shreveport using a Xerox telefax machine connected to M.D. Anderson in Houston. Dr. Carroll served as Chief of Radiology at Schumpert Hospital with a focus on radiation therapy from 1966 until his retirement in 1987, and was a founder of LSU Medical Center in Shreveport where he served as Associate Clinical Professor of Radiology. In addition, Dr. Carroll served as president of the Shreveport Medical Society and president of the Schumpert Medical Staff, and was the first president of the alumni of the Confederate Memorial Alumni Association. In addition to his passion for medicine and radiology, Dr. Carroll loved golf, photography, aviation, fishing, boating, and hunting game birds. On an impulse, he bought an airplane prior to receiving his first flight lesson and became a licensed pilot at the age of 61. However, his pride and joy was his WWII jeep that he rebuilt from scratch and used for many years on his adventures in west Texas with his favorite hunting pals, Dr. B.E. Trichel, Charlton Lyons, Jr., Harrod McClelland, and B.F. O'Neal. The beloved jeep also served admirably as the instruction vehicle when he taught his oldest grandson to drive. Kind, generous, fair, and wise, Dr. Carroll was respected and admired by his peers and patients, loved by his friends, and cherished by his family. He was a wonderful role model for his children and grandchildren, and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He indulged the 3 women in his life with untold years of dance lessons, and suffered through the same number of years of dance recitals-all recorded on his home movie camera. Dr. Carroll was preceded in death by his parents, Wynton Lenaux Carroll and Aldora Freeman Carroll. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Jean Elder Carroll, and two daughters Candy Carroll Peavy and husband Pat, and Shannon Carroll Sale and husband Frank. Dr. Carroll is survived by 3 grandchildren, Henry L. V. Bond and wife Briana, Lauren Michaels Wolfe and husband Jason, and William Wynton Michaels and wife Jocelyn, step-grandson Michael Thompson Peavy and wife Mimi, 3 great-grandchildren, Sloane and Cohen Wolfe and Presley Michaels, and 2 step-great-grandchildren John Patrick Peavy and Michael James Peavy.
