Yancey Carlos Myres Funeral services for Yancey Carlos Myres will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday September 14, 2015, in Memorial Chapel of Broadmoor Baptist Church. Officiating will be Dr. Glen E. Owens, Assistant Executive Director of Florida Baptist Convention; Dr. Larry Williams, Minister of Senior Adults of Broadmoor Baptist Church and Dr. Scott Tatum, Pastor Emeritus of Broadmoor Baptist Church. Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. in the church parlor prior to the service. A private family graveside service will follow at Forest Park Cemetery on St. Vincent. Yancey, 82, was born in Vernon, Texas, on November 20, 1932 and died peacefully at home on Friday, September 11, 2015, after several years of Parkinson's and other health problems. He grew up in Fort Worth, Texas, where he graduated from North Side High School and then attended North Texas State College in Denton, Texas, earning a math/physics degree. After a brief time in the U.S. Navy, Yancey sensed God was leading him for seminary training. In 1959, he graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary with a Masters of Theology. From 1959-1963 he pastored the Evangelical Free Church in Houston, Texas. In 1963, he worked as a Systems Analyst for Honeywell in Houston and in 1966 moved to Shreveport to work for AMF Beaird as the Division Director of Management Information Systems until his retirement in 1997. Yancey had a passion for God's Word and was a gifted Bible teacher. For many years he taught a couples Sunday School class at Broadmoor Baptist Church. In 1986, Broadmoor Baptist Church, under the pastorate of Dr. John Sullivan, started Ellerbe Road Baptist Church. A spiritual high point in Yancey's life was helping in the founding of Ellerbe Road Baptist Church where he taught a couples class and served as the Church Moderator until the first pastor was called. Yancey was thankful to Dr. Sullivan for giving him the opportunity to have a part in this ministry and thankful to Dr. Glen Owens, a close brother in the Lord, for those special times of seeking God's Will concerning the ministry at Ellerbe Road Baptist Church. In 1997, Yancey returned to Broadmoor Baptist Church where he continued to teach and serve. In 1983, Yancey developed Merchants Square, a small shopping center on Line Avenue where his wife Betty had a gift shop. He was talented at woodworking and remodeled much of the family home and built several beautiful pieces of furniture for it. Yancey was a kind man with a gentle Spirit and was loved dearly by his family and friends. Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife of 43 years, Betty Jo Gates Myres; daughter Carla Myres of Los Angeles, CA; son Dave Myres of Denver, CO; stepdaughter Kathy Fain Arnold and husband Art of Houston, TX; stepson William Fain and wife Angie of Atlanta, GA.; and five grandchildren, Kaitlynn, Tripp and Ashlynn Arnold and Robert and Patrick Fain. Yancey is also survived by his sister Katie Sue Hilburn of Round Rock, TX, extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Della Myres, and his brother Charles Myres. The family expresses their sincere appreciation to his doctors, Dr. Pete Blanchard, Dr. Richard Zweig, Dr. Russell Fileccia, St. Joseph Hospice, as well as family and friends for their many acts of kindness. Serving as pallbearers are Roy Burroughs, Grady Golden, Jack Gulledge, Grady Hooper, Bill Meaney and Tommy Powell. Honorary pallbearers are John Ballard, John Harrison, Bob Turnham and Harold Lennington.
