February 22, 1943 - March 31, 2021
Michael “Mickey” Bird Camp died in Shreveport on January 31, 2021, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease and a short battle with Covid-19. A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 23, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, 1204 Crabapple Drive, Shreveport, Louisiana. Officiating will be Reverend Mark Goins.
Mickey was born in Haynesville, LA, February 22,1943, to Joseph William “Buck” Camp and Martha Elizabeth Camp. He grew up in Bradley, Arkansas, attended school there and graduated as Valedictorian of the 1961 senior class. He then went to Southern State College where he met the love of his life, Donna Smith. They were married in 1965. After Mickey received a degree in Business Administration, he and Donna moved to Shreveport where they started careers and a family. Mickey spent many years as a salesman and later district manager for Sysco Food Systems. After retiring from Sysco, he worked for Ben E. Keith Food Systems for several years. He loved meeting customers and developed life-long friendships with many of them. He was a person who truly loved people and never met a stranger. His hard work at Sysco earned him many awards through the years.
Mickey was a life-long Methodist and a member of Christ United Methodist Church for almost 40 years. He was also a member of the Vista Sunday School class and the Men’s Prayer Breakfast. His greatest joys were spending time with his family, especially at their cabin at Little River. Playing golf with them and spending time in the river remained happy memories, and he never gave up hope that he could once again meet everyone at the river. He was an avid LSU fan and never missed the opportunity to cheer on the Tigers.
He was preceded in death by his parents, J. W. “Buck” and Elizabeth Camp, and his older brother, J. W. Camp, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Donna Lee Camp, his brother, Harry Camp and wife, Victoria of Leadville, CO, his boys, Michael Scott Camp and wife, Stephanie of Leadville, CO; and William Brandon Camp and wife Joelle of Dallas, TX, and grandchildren, William Conner Camp and Elizabeth Ruth Camp of Leadville, CO, and Charlotte Grace Camp of Dallas, TX., his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harry Carlon and Nancy Smith of Magnolia, AR., and sister-in-law, Johnnye Hartje of Conway, AR.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ United Methodist Church in Shreveport, or to Parkinson’s Research Foundation.
